Quick answer

The Shift Map is Security 51's post-ending branch selector. It lets you return to an earlier point, change a decision or operation, and play forward into a different crisis result, ending, or achievement route. You normally do not need to delete the save and replay the entire campaign.

The August 20 update added question marks, borders, and tooltips to show days that are good starting points for alternative story branches. Start with those marked nodes instead of choosing a random late day.

How to use the Shift Map

  1. Reach your first ending and open the Shift Map.
  2. Find a day with a question mark, highlighted border, or branch tooltip.
  3. Choose a point at or before the start of the crisis you want to change.
  4. Replay that day and change one meaningful choice, isolation experiment, or city operation.
  5. Continue through the affected sequence; changing a node does not instantly reveal every downstream result.
  6. Compare the new crisis outcome, ending, and Steam achievement unlocks with the original branch.

Choosing the right branch day

What you want to changeWhere to branchWhy
A crisis outcomeAt the beginning of that crisisLater interventions may be too late to change the dominant path.
A city operation resultBefore the operation is selectedThe choice needs time to affect later reports.
An isolation research routeBefore the relevant experiment/report sequenceResearch can unlock later operation options.
An endingAt the earliest marked node connected to that routeReplaying only the final day may preserve the earlier state.
A hidden achievementAt a marked question-mark nodeThe official UI now highlights useful alternative-story days.

Change one major variable per attempt. If you change several operations and visitor decisions at once, you will not know which one produced the new branch.

How branches connect to the rest of the game

The Shift Map sits between the campaign and completion content:

Days 1–30 → Shift Map → changed choice or operation → new crisis result → ending → achievement

Save and patch precautions

The August 20 update notes that older saves can show temporary timeline anomalies, including missing City Operations on the active map. The developer specifically advises players not to delete the save and to continue the shift normally.

Before diagnosing a missing branch:

  • Confirm the game is updated.
  • Continue the current shift and check the map again afterward.
  • Use the new border, question-mark, and tooltip indicators.
  • Avoid assuming that a branch is broken simply because its result is not immediate.

Common Shift Map mistakes

  • Branching too late. Replaying the last day of a crisis may not change decisions already locked in.
  • Changing everything at once. This makes the actual trigger impossible to identify.
  • Stopping after one replayed day. Some consequences appear several shifts later.
  • Starting a new save immediately. Try the built-in branch system first.
  • Following an old screenshot exactly. Updates can change visual indicators and balance.

FAQ

When does the Shift Map unlock?

It becomes relevant after reaching the first ending, when the game asks you to return to an earlier point and create an alternative story branch.

Which day should I choose on the Shift Map?

Use a day marked with a question mark, border, or branch tooltip. For a particular crisis, start at or just before that crisis begins rather than at its final result.

Do I need a new save to see another ending?

Usually, no. The Shift Map exists to replay previous decisions and follow alternative branches from the same overall progression.

Why did changing one day not alter the ending?

The controlling decision may occur earlier, or the branch may need several replayed shifts before its consequence appears. Move to the earliest marked node associated with that crisis and change one variable.
